How to Set Up Google Business Profile (Step-by-Step for Small Businesses)
Your Google Business Profile is almost certainly the most important free marketing tool your business has. It's what makes you appear in Google Maps, in the local "3-pack" results, and in searches like "[your service] near me."
And yet, an alarming number of small businesses either haven't claimed theirs, or have claimed it and left it mostly empty. If that's you, this guide will walk you through setting it up properly.
Step 1: Claim or create your profile
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Search for your business name. If it already exists (Google sometimes creates basic listings automatically), claim it. If not, create a new one.
You'll need to verify that you're the real owner. Google usually does this by sending a postcard to your business address with a verification code. It takes 5-7 days. There are sometimes options for phone or email verification, but the postcard is most common.
Don't skip verification. An unverified profile won't show up properly in search results.
Step 2: Fill in every field
Once verified, fill in absolutely everything Google asks for:
- Business name: Your actual business name. Don't stuff keywords in here ("Dave's Plumbing - Best Plumber Worcester Emergency 24/7"). Google will penalise you for that.
- Category: Choose your primary category carefully, then add secondary ones. Be as specific as possible. "Hair salon" is better than "beauty salon" if that's what you are.
- Address: Your real business address. If you work from home and don't want to share your address, you can set a service area instead.
- Phone number: A local number, not a mobile if you can help it. Customers trust landlines more (unfair but true).
- Website: Link to your website if you have one.
- Hours: Keep these accurate. Nothing annoys a customer more than driving to your shop and finding it closed when Google said it was open.
- Services/Menu: List your specific services with descriptions. This helps Google match you with relevant searches.
- Description: Write a genuine 750-character description of your business. What you do, who you serve, what makes you different.
Step 3: Add photos (lots of them)
Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks than those without. Google's own data shows 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks when businesses have photos.
Add at least 10-15 photos:
- Your shopfront or premises
- Your team (people trust faces)
- Your products or examples of your work
- The interior of your business
- Your logo and a cover photo
Use real photos, not stock images. Customers can tell the difference. Phone photos are absolutely fine as long as they're clear and well-lit.
Step 4: Start collecting reviews
Reviews are the fuel that powers your Google listing. More reviews (and better ones) means higher rankings and more trust.
To get your review link: go to your Google Business Profile dashboard, find the "share review form" option, and copy the link. Then send it to customers after every completed job.
A simple text or email works: "Thanks for choosing us! If you had a good experience, we'd really appreciate a Google review: [link]." That's it. No complicated funnel needed.
Respond to every review within 24 hours. Thank people for positive ones. For negative ones, be professional, acknowledge the issue, and offer to make it right. Potential customers read your responses as much as the reviews themselves.
Step 5: Keep it active
Google rewards profiles that stay active. Post updates regularly:
- New products or services
- Special offers or seasonal promotions
- Events or changes to opening hours
- Photos of recent work
Even one post a week makes a difference. It signals to Google that your business is active and current, which helps your ranking.
